2020-2024: Instructions for various spray devices
The process
Start by asking questions
When making instructions for use I start by analysing the product and its use steps. What is the context of use? Which accessories are necessary? What is crucial information for safe and effective use of the product? Do any steps need extra emphasis? What knowledge does an average user have? Are there any regulatory requirements to consider?
These questions help to achieve instructions for use that offer exactly the information users need, in a clear and concise manner.
Create by sketching
I analyse while sketching and I sketch while analysing. It’s the way I work. It helps me familiarize myself with the product. How can I make a simplified representation of the product? What are distinct features of the product? Which details can be left out? How do I convey actions, motions and sounds?
Style and format
The style and format should be suitable for the product. The booklet might need to fit in a box together with the product. But often a digital format should also be available. I finalize the color scheme, which may be used for clarification or in some cases just needs to comply with branding.
Testing
As soon as I have a draft version of the instructions for use, I make sure to test it with peers or end users. Do they understand the instructions? Is the information correct? Collecting feedback is invaluable for the process.
